Expansion Of Academic Community Spaces At CUNY Hunter College

JRM Construction Management completed an 18,200 SF expansion and renovation of CENTRO (The Center for Puerto Rican Studies) at Hunter College, located at 2180 Third Avenue in New York City. The project transforms multiple levels of the facility to better support CENTRO’s academic, cultural, and community-focused mission.

Renovations span the cellar, café gallery, eating lounge, and office floors, introducing flexible, performance-driven spaces. Key architectural features include pivoting movable gallery walls, fire-rated glass doors, acoustic windows and panels, and distinctive moss wall installations.

Upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, including a de-ionization tank, CRAC unit, and curved lighting elements, enhance both functionality and design. The completed project delivers a dynamic environment that reflects CENTRO’s cultural significance and supports its evolving programming needs.
